Handicap Committee By Jean Keen
We have completed the measuring of the golf course from the 150 and 100 yardage markers. There were a few discrepancies; such as Hole #7’s 150 yardage marker is actually 154, Hole #11’s 100 yardage marker is actually 104, Hole #13’s 118 yardage marker is actually 123, and Hole #17, the blue tee’s yardage is 138 from the middle of the tee. We have asked maintenance to move the yardage markers accordingly. We have also measured all the greens and have lost some green surface on numerous holes.
Our next project is to measure all the hole yardages and place a marker at each tee box to reflect the exact yardage location. After all of this has been completed, we will have the Florida State Golf Association re-rate our course. Back To Top
Message from Andy Jorgensen Golf Course Superintendent
I would like to take this opportunity to introduce myself to the members of Southern Woods. I have seen and spoken to a few of you and I am quickly trying to learn many new names. I came to Southern Woods from Newnan Country Club, a private, 18-hole country club located south of Atlanta where I was the Assistant Superintendent. Southern Woods and Newnan Country Club have a lot in common, most noticeably the high expectations from the membership for course conditioning and green speed. I am confident I can meet and exceed those expectations as well as improve the aesthetics of the golf course.
Now to the golf course. We have experienced some significant growth out of all the Bermudagrass the past few weeks. This is based on the increased amount of fertilizers we have been using to aid in the transition from the over-seed back to the Bermudagrass base. We have also begun to verticut the putting surfaces on a regular basis to promote new growth of the TifDwarf. Along with this process, we have also been lightly topdressing to help with ball speed and smoothness of roll. This is a minor disruption that benefits the putting surfaces throughout the year.
As you are reading this, we are currently in the process of aerifying all of the Bermudagrass on the golf course. Aerification is a very vital process that promotes new growth of the turfgrass plant by alleviating compaction and allowing air, water and nutrients down in to the soil. The greens will get a heavy topdressing and verticutting to promote new growth and smooth the putting surface. Since this is a very time consuming project, we will be closed the first three Mondays in May.
If you have any questions or concerns, please feel free to stop by my office or you can reach me at 382-5366, or at:

NATURAL PARS - 5TH Flight
#13 Mim Brockett, Jenny Sanders, #17 Ruth Askins, Dot Reed and Pat Schuessler.
Many thanks to the members who played on our 7th birthday. Your play was awesome! Several records were broken: 22 birdies were made, 10 chip-ins, 4 sandies and 5 natural pars by the 5th flight. The game winners were 34, 32 and 31 under! Congratulations to Mary Beth Stassi for breaking 90 for the first time on league day with an 88 and to Tina Rose for making a birdie for the first time on league day.
In keeping with the copper theme of the seventh year a gum ball golf machine was filled with pennies for the members to guess the number of. The winner was to keep the pennies. The guesses ranged from 147 to 5,000. The actual number (after a count was made by the machine at Winn Dixie) was 1,510. Tied were Janice McCullough and Claudia Pozezinski with guesses of 1,500 each. They split the pennies and they didn't even have to count and wrap them! The favor given to each member was a divot repair tool with the LGA birthdate printed on it and a marker with a 1995 penny attached to it. (There are some extras for the members who were unable to attend the event.) Many, many thanks to Ina Ryder and her husband Joe for finding, polishing and attaching the pennies to the markers and for counting the pennies for the guessing contest.
Thanks to the following members for helping with the Founders Day events in some way: Anne Broadbent and June Klingensmith; Bobbie Just, Louise Marcus and Jackie Antonacci; Lou Averman and Linda Schrock; Claudia Pozezinski and Mary Beth Stassi; Jenny Sanders and Edy Shaffer; Bobbie Just and Barbra Kitchen, Evan Coe and Harold Layman; Christine, Donna and Sonia, waitresses; Betty and Greg, cooks; and Rick and Herb. Thanks also to the 15 or so members who contributed delicious items for the pre-game refreshments and to the Club for providing the coffee.
Thanks to Elaine Harwood and Jenny Sanders for assisting the Tournament Committee and Marge Allegrini and Del Russo for scoring for 5th Flight.
Members are reminded to pay your dues for next season as soon as possible. Plan on bringing your checkbook with you on Closing Day if you haven’t paid by then. Dues must be paid by July 15th in order to have your name in the Handbook. On each Thursday through Closing Day you will be given an opportunity to make changes to phone numbers, e-mail addresses, etc. for next season’s Handbook. See or call Rose Marie Coe, Handbook Committee, if you have any changes or additions.
You will also have an opportunity to sign up to help with the Summer League on Closing Day. Committee Chairpersons are reminded to turn in your reports and notebooks to president, Pat Casey by Closing Day, May 9th.
Check the bulletin board for sign-up sheets for the Ramblers and High Country.
Please take note of the six beautiful magnolia trees provided by the SWLGA which are planted just beyond the cart path behind hole #13 in memory of Linda Foster’s husband, Dennis. The magnolia was his favorite tree. And no matter that #13 was not his favorite golf hole, he would be extremely pleased with these trees!

Message from Stan Cooke
Vice President/Director of Golf
I am hopeful that the information provided to you in the General Membership Meeting gave everyone a better understanding of the current status of Southern Woods Golf Club. Meetings like these are advantageous as everyone obtains a clear picture of the future of our Club through a foundation of facts and figures. Please let me know if I can improve upon such meetings in the future.
With the beginning of summer upon us, the golf course maintenance staff must take measures to control invader pests that enjoy "dining" upon the Bermuda grass plants prevalent on the golf course. Therefore, the Southern Woods golf course will be completely closed May 3rd and 4th to apply Curfew, an extremely strong chemical that controls mole cricket and nematode activity. Although "chemicals applied" signs will be posted throughout the golf course, I want to remind everyone (including pets) to stay off the golf course during this timeframe.
During the course closure, arrangements have been made for Southern Woods members (with golf privileges) to play Sugarmill Woods Country Club and/or World Woods Golf Club (some restrictions apply). Simply inquire with the Southern Woods Golf Professional Staff if you are interested in scheduling a tee time at one of these golf facilities.
As a reminder, a round of golf at Southern Woods is to begin on hole #1 (or #10 with permission from the golf staff) unless prior approval has been obtained from the Club. Also, all golfers must register in the golf shop prior to play. The golf shop closes at 5:00 p.m.; therefore, please register with the golf professional staff prior to teeing off as noted under Article 18 of the Southern Woods Rules Handbook. Everyone can enjoy our wonderful golf course by following these simple policies.
Did you know that you may rent a golf car at Southern Woods Golf Club as late as 5:00 p.m. and return it following play? I’ve encountered several members in years past that didn’t realize that the golf car could be kept out later than 5:00 p.m. So remember, "the last golf car out is 5:00 p.m.," but golf can be played until dusk. Congratulations to Ted Brockett for his hole in one on 17 during our President’s Cup Tournament! Witnesses to this spectacular feat included Ray Allegrini, Bill Sperry, and Joe Miller.
New MGA Members
The MGA extends a warm welcome to our following new members: Sam Loethem, Bob Chadderton, Bob Ingerick, Mike Dalton, and John J. Baron.
Golf Definitions found in the Golfing Dictionary
Golf can best be defined as an endless series of tragedies obscured by the occasional miracle.
The term "mulligan" is really a contraction of the phrase "maul-it-again."
A "gimme" can best be defined as an agreement between two golfers - neither of whom can putt very well.
Here are the results of the MGA for the month of March:
Mar. 6 - Best 2 of 4 on 4s & 5s; best 3 on 3
1st Place with a -23; Art Gruenwald, Scott Litzenburg, Carl Petri, David Cochran.
2nd Place with a -22; Bob Menard, Bill Robben, Pete Marvel, Jack Sandlas.
3rd Place with a -19; Dave Goddard, Bob Foster, Ferd Neurohr, Bill Gilbert.
4th Place with a -18; Tony Schmid, Ron Broadbent, Ed Averman, Evan Coe.
Mar. 10 - Association Challenge
The MGA vs. the LGA challenge was held on Sunday, March 10. Both sides fought furiously but predictably, the Ladies out-did the men by a 201 to 141 score. Looks like we’ll have to go back and develop a different strategy for next year’s Challenge match.
Mar. 13 - Best 2 of 4
1st Place with a -26; Ron Severson, Scott Litzenburg, Sterling Dobbs, Tony Schmid.
2nd Place with a -25; Joe Silvestri, Glen Davis, Steve Marcus, Bill Schuessler.
3rd Place with a -22; Paul Vasterling, John Romeo, Pat Walsh, Charles Klasic.
4th Place with a -21; George Germek, Joe Miller, Bob Foster, David Cochran.

Message from Rick Kelso
Head Golf Professional
May is here and with it comes the Hot and Muggy days and hopefully afternoon thunderstorms. Our summer travelers start heading to their summer destination. We hope that this summer brings you lots of fun and happiness, be safe and we’ll see you in the fall.
May also brings us into transition period for the golf course. This is where the winter grasses we over seed with in October start to die out and the base Bermuda grasses start to grow again. We also see a lot of activity from our pesky neighbors the mole crickets and nematodes. So, to help make this year’s transition go as smoothly as it can we have scheduled a few dates in May the entire membership needs to be aware of. May 3rd and May 4th we will be applying a CURFEW APPLICATION. With this application we must close the entire course for these days. So, we have made arrangements for the Members to call World Woods or Sugarmill Woods for tee-time two (2) days in advance for tee-times for these two days only. The rate is $17.50 for 18 holes and $8.75 inclusive for 9 holes for Dual Full Golf and Full Golf members and $20.00 inclusive for 18 hole and $10.00 inclusive for 9 holes for Tenant/Non Resident, Social Golf, Annual, Corporate members on the Pine Barrens and or Rolling Oaks. If you would want to play the Short Course the fee would be $10.00 for 18 holes and $5.00 for 9 holes. Cash or credit card must pay all fees. Handicap flags are not available on the Championship Courses. For these two days at Sugarmill Woods you would pay the same as you would at Southern Woods. If you’re not a Dual Member then you must pay by credit card. If you have any questions, please feel free to stop by the pro shop. We will also be AERIFYING the golf course on May 6th, and then the following two Mondays we will be doing other areas on the course that we don’t get finished on the 6th. Your cooperation during this time will be greatly appreciated.
The 2002 Ladies Ryder Cup was held on February 2nd, 9th, and 23rd, but the final round was postponed due to rain until March 21st. Herbies Hellions came into the final with a 1-point lead, but Kelso’s Angels staged a dramatic comeback and pulled out a victory on the final day with a 24 to 16 margin. Kelso’s Angels were composed of Mary Ellen McCoy, Gwen Becker, Maggie Morton, Gail Wilson, Roberta Corso, B.J. Smith, Abby Statz, Marcia Bader, Pat Layman, Sally Cure, Phyllis Reisert, Joan Danzey, Val Mahoney, Linda Medland, Fran Merlino, Sandy Galasso, Louise Marcus, Arlene Stohrer, Carol Tyner, Ramona Klee, Joanne Johnson, Nancy Theodore, and Anne Broadbent. Way to go Ladies, great playing!
SHOTS OF THE MONTH
Jim Cahill had a hole in one on 1/19/02 using an 8 iron on the 17th hole from 131 yards, to help lead the Kelso Killers on to a 24 to 12 victory during the Men’s 2002 Challenge Cup.
Bill Gilbert had his first career hole in one on #8, 3/29/02. Bill told me that he used a 5 iron, but the others told me it was the longest shaft they have ever seen in a five iron. He also told me it was a calm beautiful day and tees were at the 169 yard marker. The others told me they were sworn to not talk about it any more. Great shot, Mr. Gilbert!
Scott Litzenburg on #17 playing with his favorite son-in-law hit a smooth 9 iron into the hole for a hole in one from 131 yards. The only thing I want to know is, was he your favorite son-in-law before your great shot?
Dr. Ted Brockett had a hole in one on March 10th, during the Association Challenge. His great shot came on # 17 from the 104 yards while using a 9 iron. The only bad thing to say is that this shot didn’t help the Men out, because the Ladies beat the guys in the Association Challenge for the second straight year.
